The diurnal birds of prey are formally classified into six families of two orders.
- Accipitridae: hawks, eagles, buzzards, harriers, kites, and Old World vultures.
- Pandionidae: the osprey.
- Sagittariidae: the secretarybird.
- Falconidae: falcons, caracaras, and forest falcons.
- Cathartidae: New World vultures, including condors.
